The last year has been pretty tough for Aurelia. After that incident that ended with her having to get an abortion, leaving her fragile, she desperately needs to get away. So, when a friend of hers, Natasha, finds her a job as privet tourist guide for foreign yacht-owners at Syros, she seizes the opportunity.
It is the middle of July, when Aurelia boards the yacht of some British family, showing them around the island, before taking them for a swim at a secluded beach on the Didimi islet, near Syros. That’s when she gets attacked by a wasp, which manages to enter her ear.
When she wakes up in the medical centre, she is told that the wasp isn’t in her ear any more. Yet, that’s only the half of it. The blood tests they ran, to make sure she is okay, show she’s pregnant. Of course, that can’t be. Aurelia hadn’t had intercourse with anyone for a very long time, and the tests wouldn’t be able to show it yet if it were from last night’s misstep. Or would they?
Things only get weirder as time goes by. By night her belly has swollen as if she’d already been pregnant for weeks, if not months. And then there are the wasps. They seem to be stalking her. They force her to retreat inside her house, not daring to go outside lest they attack her again.
As the lines between reality and hallucination blur, Aurelia begins to question everything she sees, everything she feels. With horrible memories from the past, distant and recent, returning to hunt her, and with her friend Natasha having left for the mainland on some urgent business, Aurelia is left alone to fight her winged demons. To fight for her sanity and for her life.
